It's the same as with other compatibility efforts: to save a day
of debugging for some poor soul stuck with maintaining crazy
code base behind a misconfigured DNS server, that relies on a
particular behavior of "host -i".

Case in point:

    $ host -i ::1
    1.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.ip6.int
domain name pointer localhost.
