NLnet Labs respects your privacy and handles your (personal) data carefully. With this privacy statement, we would like to inform you about what personal data we collect when you visit our website ( and how we process this data.

What data will be collected?

NLnet Labs only collects the information necessary to show you the website. Like any website, we collect general information about visitors to our website. With regard to personal data, we only collect the IP address of your computer.

The general visitor information is used to show you the website and to analyse how many visitors our website gets, which web pages are visited and where the visitors come from. With this information, we can analyse and improve the website in a privacy-friendly manner.

We do not in any way pass on the data collected by us to third parties, unless we are legally obliged to do so (for example, if the authorities request data from us). Up until the revision date of this document, no request to hand over data has ever been submitted. If this were to happen we will report it here immediately.

Data retention period

The general visit data shall not be retained for more than 120 days.

Data security

We have enabled encryption on our website to prevent misuse of the website’s data. Encryption makes the data traffic between you and the web servers unreadable, so that outsiders do not have access to it.

Inspection, correction and deletion of data

Pursuant to the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have the right of access to your personal data upon request and, if necessary, to amend it or have it deleted. You can find out how to contact us at the bottom of this privacy statement. Because we do not log your full IP address in our analytics software and webserver log (more on that below), you will need to supply us with additional information such as your device and browser, as well as the date and time of your visit for us to be able to honour your request.

We put analytical cookies on your device to analyse the use of our website and how visitors have arrived at it. We run Matomo (formerly Piwik) on our own privately held en hosted webservers. Matomo is the most privacy-friendly analytical tool currently available. The statistics generated with these cookies are used only to improve our website. The data will not be shared with third parties.

Because the impact of these analytical cookies on your privacy is very limited in light of the GDPR and Section 11.7a of the Dutch Telecommunication Act, you do not need to give your consent for this.

To safeguard your privacy even further we have obscured various data points, which are:

  • The last 16 bits of each IPv4 address and last 80 bits of each IPv6 address are anonymised (we only see or 2001:db8:ac10::)
  • Log files are not saved for longer than 120 days
  • We support Do Not Track
  • Tracking cookies are disabled, so that we will not track you when you go to other websites
